Isaiah 7:14 ... Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
32 Psalm
Mary's Song
There was something special about Mary. In most ways she was just an ordinary teen girl of her day. Her family
was not wealthy. They were not among the rich and famous. She probably had a few close friends, but
being most popular was probably unimportant to
Mary.
No, what was so special about Mary was her complete devotion to God. Nothing
else mattered to her as much as her desire to live in a way that
pleased Him. And God must have been pleased. Because of all the
young women in Israel, God chose Mary to give birth to His Son Jesus.
Luke chapter 1: 26-33. And in the sixth month
the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail,
thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among
women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his
saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for
thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and
bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of
the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father
David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for
ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
It is interesting how calm Mary was when the Angel
Gabriel appeared to her. It says she was confused by Gabriel's words, but
most of us would probably not be only confused - we would be terrified. We
would probably have run and hidden
like the shepherds watching their flocks wanted to do, or perhaps tried to
fight the Angel like Jacob did. Mary did not try to argue like Moses did when
God asked Him to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. She did not try to bargain with God like Abraham
did when God was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
I think it is
probably the case that Mary was so close to God in her daily devotions that it
was only natural for her to trust Him fully when He sent a messenger from heaven to speak to her.
She was puzzled, however, about how she was to have a baby since she was a virgin.
Gabriel told her, Luke 1:35. The Holy Ghost
shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:
The Angel also told Mary that in just 3 months
her cousin Elisabeth was going to have a baby. Mary was thrilled by
this news as Elisabeth and her husband were very old and had waited so
long to have a child.
When Mary went to visit Elisabeth a very unusual
thing happened. The young baby inside Elisabeth leaped when Mary spoke.
Elisabeth, at that moment, became filled with
the Holy Spirit and shouted joyfully to Mary, Luke
1:42-45.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the
babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there
shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
When Mary
heard the Holy Spirit speaking these words through Elizabeth, she
responded with these words of humbleness, thanks, and prophecy.
Mary's Song Luke 1:46-55
My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:
for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things;
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
He hath shewed strength with his arm;
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats,
and exalted them of low degree.
He hath filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.
These were the most exciting times the world had ever
seen. Elisabeth was about to give birth to John the Baptist, the man the
prophet Malachi told us, in the very last words of the Old Testament, would
prepare the way for Jesus
-
Malachi 4:5-6. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn
the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their
fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
Mary, only a few months later, would give birth to
the Son of God. Jesus. Just the mention of His Name and Angels bow
down and worship - Satan and demons tremble. Jesus is the
fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham - the hope given to Israel. Jesus
is the One foretold to Adam and Eve as God's plan to defeat Satan and provide us a way we
can again be close to God -
Genesis 3:15. And I will put
enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall
bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Jesus is God's Sacrificial Lamb who takes
away the sins of the world. He is Our Redeemer, Our Lord and Savior.
