Many generations after Joseph, a King of Egypt named Pharaoh ordered that all Hebrew baby boys be killed.
To save Moses, his mother built a raft and hid it among some reeds in the Nile
River. The raft with the baby was found by one of Pharaoh's
daughters. Moses grew up as a Prince in the King's household, but he never
forgot that his own people, the Hebrews, were slaves.
He prayed often that they be set free. On one day Moses became so angry
over a slave's mistreatment that he killed the Egyptian abuser. However,
Moses' murder act was seen by others, and Moses felt that he had to leave Egypt
or he would be arrested and punished. So for years Moses lived away from
his own people.
One day, while in this new land, Moses saw a burning bush.
Exodus chapter 3.
And Moses said, I
will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.4. And
when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the
midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5. And he
said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place
whereon thou standest is holy ground.6. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy
father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses
hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.7. And the Lord said, I have
surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their
cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;8. And I am come
down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out
of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and
honey; ..
So God was going to free the Hebrews from Egypt and give them their own land.
This was around the year 1492 BC - 214 years after Jacob's tribe settled in
Goshen.
God asked Moses to
be the leader of this escape out of Egypt to freedom (exodus), and Moses made
excuses to God about why he shouldn't be the one to be in charge. It's
hard to say "No" to God speaking from a burning bush, so eventually Moses
agreed.
Pharaoh was not eager to let the slaves go, so God caused disasters
(plagues) to happen that convinced the King he should do what Moses was
demanding and let the Hebrew people go. The last plague killed all of the first
born sons of Egypt except those who were in houses that were protected by lamb's
blood being spread over the doorway.
Exodus chapter 12
For I will pass through
the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of
Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute
judgment: I am the Lord.
13. And the
blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see
the blood, I will pass over you,
and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of
Egypt.
The blood protected those who obeyed and applied it as God directed. When the
Angel of Death saw the blood, he would pass over the home without harming
anyone. They were told not only to apply the blood of a perfect lamb, but to
also prepare a 'passover' meal. They had to hurry because they were leaving in
the morning. They could not allow time for the bread they were making to
rise before baking. They would eat unrisen (unleavened) bread at their passover
meal.
Still, just after the Hebrews left Egypt, Pharaoh had second thoughts, and
sent his army to recapture them. But God parted the Red Sea for Moses and let
the Hebrews cross on dry land. When Pharaoh's army tried to cross, the waters
rushed back and drowned them.
The land the Hebrews crossed into was a desert wilderness called Sinai.
God's plan was for his people, the Hebrews, to cross the Sinai desert and claim
the land filled with 'milk and honey'. This would be the land God gave to their
ancestor, Abraham - The Promised Land. But first the Hebrews had to be
prepared. They had been in Egypt for a long time and had adopted many of the
Egyptian's false beliefs and bad actions. When his chosen people, the Hebrews,
returned to true beliefs and good actions - became more holy - God would allow them
to cross the Jordan River into 'the promised land'. God wrote 10
commandments on tablets of stone to instruct His people. Moses received
thes after praying and worshipping 40 days on Mt. Sinai.

The Great Sphinx
at Giza, Egypt. An inscription between the paws, the “Dream Stela” or “Sphinx
Stella,” tells how Thutmose IV was promised kingship by Harmakhis, god of the
Sphinx, even though he was not the first-born son of Amehotep IIB. It is
possible that Thutmoses IV’s older brother died in the plague of the first born
